First you will want to make sure the switch is turned on. I would need to know you model to tell you where the switch is and how to turn it on. I have an HP Pavilion DV5000 and my switch and light are on the top center of the keyboard ad the light is at the base of the screen.

If the light is on and you are still not connecting it may be somthing else. Please give more details.
